The most important factor for college admissions is your high school transcript—judged by grades received and the rigor of the courses. However, as the difficulty level and content of high school courses may vary from school the school, college entrance tests, like the SAT and ACT, provide college admissions offices with a standardized criteria to use when considering a candidate’s application for admission. In situations where standardized tests scores are optional for admission consideration, many colleges will use the scores for student placement in required courses or as a factor in awarding scholarship and grant money.

Most students take the SAT Reasoning Test, SAT Subject Tests, or ACT during their junior or senior year in high school. Many students take the tests twice—in the spring of junior year and in the fall of senior year; many scoring higher the second time around. It is to your advantage to familiarize yourself with the format, content, and scoring of these standardized tests. The articles listed below provide information and tips for test-takers.
