Post 9/11 G.I. Bill and Yellow Ribbon Program
Officially known as the Post 9/11 Veterans Education Assistance Act of 2008, the newest GI Bill significantly increases the education benefits available to departing military veterans. The Post 9/11 GI Bill (Chapter 33) applies to men and women who have served in the military a minimum of 90 days after September 11, 2001. Those who serve a minimum of three years on active duty since 9/11/01 are eligible for four years of tuition costs equal to their state's highest public university tuition plus a monthly housing stipend, yearly expense for books and other benefits. For more information, visit www.GIBill.va.gov.
The Yellow Ribbon GI Education Enhancement Program, also known simply as Yellow Ribbon Program is a provision of the Post 9/11 GI Bill. This program is designed to help veterans afford tuition at any college or university whose cost exceeds those of public colleges. The provision allows colleges to enter into an agreement with the Department of Veterans Affairs to help fund the cost of tuition that exceeds the highest public in-state undergraduate tuition rate. Colleges may contribute up to fifty percent of the additional expenses beyond what is offered by the GI Bill. The Department of Veterans Affairs will match that same amount. For more information, visit www.GIBill.va.gov.
The information on the following pages was obtained from the individual military services' Web sites and personnel. Several tuition assistance pro- grams available to departing veterans will be replaced by the Post 9/11 GIBill and Yellow Ribbon Program but are still in effect for some veterans.
