Improve your writing skills before going to college
| Wednesday, January 25, 2012 |
Strong writing skills will play an essential role in achieving success in college. If you have never been a strong writer, there are plenty of ways for you to improve your abilities before your first day of college.
Maybe your writing difficulties stem from the fact that you’ve never been able to master the analytical essay often required as part of your study of literature. While you should seek help with this aspect of writing you can also look into other writing genres. See if your school offers creative writing or poetry. You may find that your skills will improve the more engaged you are in the subject.
If your English teacher continues to return your essays covered in red ink, do not ignore these comments – seek extra help. College professors will expect you to know how to craft well conceived essays. While they may offer advice on research sources, few professors will assist you with the mechanics of writing. These are the skills you are expected to bring to college.
Now is the time to ask yourself some writing-related questions. Do you know how to write an engaging thesis sentence? Can you properly cite sources? If not, it’s time to seek help.
One of the best ways to improve your writing is to see how other writers craft sentences and get their point across. Therefore, you should try to read as much as you can outside of school. This does not mean you have to spend your nights reading Dostoyevsky. Read whatever you enjoy, whether it be magazines and comic books or an entertainment news Web site. Whenever you come across a word you are unfamiliar with, look it up in the dictionary to enhance your vocabulary.
At the same time, try to do some writing just for fun. Keep a journal, start a blog or just make lists. The more you peck away at your keyboard or put pen to paper, the more practice you will get assembling sentences or making a persuasive argument.
Taking each of these steps during your search for colleges will also help when it comes time to write your college admissions essay.
If you feel your skills are still not at the level you would like them to be when you arrive at college, you can always seek assistance from your school’s writing and reading center. Trained tutors can often provide you with help on all phases of the writing process. You can also get helpful handouts on everything from sentence construction to basic grammar rules if you are in need of a refresher.
While college will still be a challenge, taking these steps should leave you better prepared to tackle your writing assignments in all your college subjects. SchoolGuides.com – helping you find colleges and universities that offer the accredited programs that most interest you.
